Painting Just For Because!!!

I love my work and I love the projects I'm working on right now but sometimes I get an urge to create something different and that feeling will naw at me until I stuff it with a free painting day.

This was a sketch I did while in church (of course I was listening - shut up)and I thought it would be fun to record it and set it to music - I've always loved this Tori Amos song. I'm still loving photoshop as well...now I want a bigger badder computer...and a cintique.

  2. Any reason you don`t work on more, different layers? (Say, for example, a separate layer for the dress, bird, hair, etc.)

  7. That was awesome! You're the man.

Did you download textured brush sets or paper to get your traditional paint texture on there?

  8. This is awesome will! Trying to figure out what brush you use to get that great painted/pastel look. Did you create your own?

  9. Sorry! The previous comment was from me...I was just logged in as my husband. Oops! But seriously...trying to learn more about brushes....did you make your own?

  18. This is brilliant, Will. I hope you don't mind, but I posted it over at my group blog... www.pbjunkies.blogspot.com.
I was so excited when I discovered you were the illustrator of one of my kid's favorite board games. (1313 dead end drive).
    Anyway, I'm a fan. =o)

  19. Thanks for all the kindness - Making videos is really fun for me and I really enjoy the relationship visual art can have to music.

Randi, when I've used more layers inevitably I find myself painting on the wrong layer - so frustrating! I realize the advantages of multiple layers and perhaps as I become more familiar with photoshop I'll increase the number of layers.

Julie, I'm using stock brush #27 but I did scan a black and white version of my traditional painting texture and uploaded it into the texture palette. Then I move the depth slider back and forth during the painting so that sometimes I'm painting on the peaks and sometimes in the valleys.

Sarah, and anyone else, you can call me and I can explain this very simple process - Jed Henry taught me how to do this and actually from what I've heard it all traces back to Jim Madsen and eventually to Don Seegmiller - the digital guru.

Eileen, If I could find a market for this I'd be all over it! Any ideas?

Several people have asked how I make these videos: It's really easy but somewhat time consuming. My "giant" video (scroll down to find it) was rendered using sort of a stop motion technique - in other words I took hundreds of pictures and put them together in ULEAD video studio. This is a very time intensive process and a real pain the keister.

In this Fairytale video I used WM Capture - a software program - I think it was less than $40. It's extremely easy to use - basically just launch it and draw a box around the area on the screen you wish to record. Then simply hit record and start doing whatever you want on the computer and it will record it. Then take that video file into a video editor (I use ULEAD but I don't necessarily recommend it - my blood pressure raises and I say bad words) add music, stills, effects, etc and render.

  21. I love the flaming red hair and how it brightened up at the end. Gorgeous.

Does Video Studio crash as often for you as it does for me? I have to save after every single change I make. (I think it's actually made by Corel now.)

Maybe I missed this, but did you also draw the castle?

And also, do you adjust the frame rate in WM Capture or in Video Studio?

  22. Roz, I'm flattered that you gave me a shout out! Thanks! very nice blog!

Nikki, glad your back up and glad I could help!

Beth, Video studio is a toy and Corel should package it with cute kid graphics and market it in the toy isle. I have to keep telling myself this to avoid going insane while trying to edit my videos with it. I did however get what I paid for and for that I should feel good I guess. I bleed for my videos and Corel has helped to insure that with Video Studio I'll always need a transfusion at the end. I always feel like I've barely won a dog fight when the video is finished. Sometimes I dream of meeting the guys in the V.S. department at Corel and sitting down for a chat with them after one of my editing sessions. When I can afford it I'll move up to Final Cut Pro - but for now I'll have to be content with V.S. and anger management sessions in the backyard with a sledge hammer and an old truck tire.

Oh, I adjust the frame rate in WM Capture...and the castle was stolen off google.
