I Miss Snow

Is there anything wrong with that? I realize that loving snow is probably politically incorrect...and I understand that by declaring my love for the cold I'm probably alienating myself from some of you. Just know that I won't judge you for hating the very thing that gets me going! I love the quite, the beauty it gives the landscape, the sound it makes under my feet as I hike, and the playground it provides.

I painted the penguin in Photoshop last night as I looked at the photos of melting snow I took yesterday. Only high level snow left for this year and it's getting harder to get to. I guess I'll have to wait for next year - score one for the snow haters -  but your days are numbered!

Below are a few of the photos I took this year on my daily hikes...

  1. I like snow, too. I just got enough snow - and ice, subzero temps, and wind chill factors - after 6 winters in MN to last a lifetime. The mild winter we had here in New England? LOVED IT.

    1. I like the balance too - I'm sure I would grow tired of cold I there were no summer :)

  2. Snow's only good when it's melted. You need to move to the south pole with your penguins. Awesome illustration though!

  3. Ah, we love snow, but we never get it here, which is why my son tells me weekly(sometimes daily) that we need to move to someplace cold ;) Love the penguin but we just came in from swimming and looking at him is making me cold. It's a good thing :)

  4. I really like that second photo for showing the amazing warm colours in the snow, just like you have in your illustration - purples, pinks, yellows, not just white & blue & grey.
Have you seen Hans Bacher's post about reference from photos vs artworks for the colour of snow for animation colour scripts? Very interesting, and your photos and illustration reminded me of his post, so I thought I'd pass it on, considering your recent musings on colour. http://one1more2time3.wordpress.com/2012/04/19/color-1-1/
I've only seen snow in real life once so I don't have enough experience of it to know if i like it or dislike it. The thought of as much snow as you see every year kind of blows my mind. I wonder if I like the warmly lit snow more than the blue-grey snow because something that cold seems so alien to me.

    1. I'll check it out - thanks for the link - I love developing a reference library and putting it to good use!

The great thing about snow is that it takes on any color so there's red snow, blue snow, green snow, and yes yellow snow - yikes!

    1. Thanks - I grew up in Maryland near Washington D.C. and our mountains are very small in comparison so I really appreciate these huge mountains out here in Utah.

  7. Hey! I love this. I actually have a request for your blog. I'm getting on it ALL the time to look up old posts, cuz let's face it you have GOOD stuff on here... but it takes me like 20 minutes to find what I'm looking for every time. Can you include a "search" bar or something to make things easier to find and look up? I was trying to find your xtranormal.com video about illustrating children's books just now and it took me FOREVER. And yeah, I really do get on here often to look up other stuff too. Thanks for all the good stuff you post! Seriously. Sometimes I just like showing off your time-lapsed paintings to myself... or just to watch how you do them. Your fairytale one is my fav. And the giant one cuz it's traditionally done. So anyway, that is my request! Thanks!

  11. Another snow lover here in Delaware! My Mom and I get phone calls from Snow-a-phobes when the white stuff starts coming down, telling us "i hope you're happy" and asking if we are doing. "Snow Dance." And of course we tell them "YES!" on both accounts!

No snow this winter here, and it was just plain sad. I miss snow too.

  13. Havent had a good snowfall in our parts for a couple of years. Always helps to balance out the seasons in the midwest. Great illustration as always!

  14. We haven't had a good snowfall around here in a number of years. Balances the seasons out and would be good for our drought in the midwest. Great illustration as always!

  15. We haven't had a good snowfall here in a couple of years. Always balances the seasons out and could use it with our past drought like weather here in the midwest. Great illustration as always!
