How I Use Procreate To Draw On My iPad

In the video below I show how I'm using Procreate to make drawings for my children's books, iPad apps, personal and freelance work. I love the Procreate app! It allows me to make high resolution drawings that I can email to my desktop and paint in photoshop. No more running out of paper. No more pens, pencils, not having a pen, running out of lead, etc. I can take my work anywhere and I can go through the entire drawing/refinement process without the use of a scanner or tracing paper. It has made me much more productive in that I can do finish work anywhere - doctor's office, meetings, waiting in the car, airplanes, conferences - you name it. The only thing I have to remember to do is take enough work with me before I leave the studio. I hope you enjoy the video...

  1. Thx for this lovely Post Will! This is why i like that App so much... and the App run so fast. I love the iPad. I hope one Day Apple will come out with a Big IPad like the Cintique 21ux or maybe a little bit smaller... :-) Wouldn´t that be Great?!? ;-)

  4. I'm intrigued after watching your video and at $4.99 will probably just buy it to experiment with myself. I know you mentioned using Procreate for your preliminary drawings, but would you ever use it rather than Photoshop to create your finished pieces for an iPad app? I was listening to you video on Folio Academy about creating iPad apps and you mention creating images 4-5x the resolution of the iPad if you want to possibly also publish traditionally, just wondering if Procreate is robust enough to do it. Thx.

    1. Good questions Lisa. Personally it isn't powerful enough for me to get the effects I want for my personal style. So I don't go to finish with it. Also while it can handle a large sketch file size - the iPad processor isn't powerful enough to handle the demands of multiple layers. I love it for sketching - LOVE IT FOR SKETCHING - but it's not a finishing tool for me. Some of my files in Photoshop end up being over 100mb - the iPad can't handle that size...someday though.

    2. Good to know, thanks Will for taking the time to explain. We are about to do some house renovations and I am having to really pare down for the next couple months, so I was hoping to pack up my laptop and Wacom and just use my iPad, but I better keep the Wacom available! :)

    1. It's simple - put the photo on one layer - get a new layer - draw on new layer - delete photo layer.
