iPad Finger Painting

I'm having way too much fun with the "brushes" app on my ipad. I painted this at a doctors office and in the car waiting for my son and a little while watching old netflix "The Office" episodes with the fam. My favorite Michael Scott line: "Would I rather be feared or loved?...I want people to be afraid of how much they love me."

But back to the ipad - while the touch screen leaves many to complain about the lack of pressure sensitivity I find that an easy work around is just lowering the opacity to almost zero and making lots of little strokes. I love the portability and the fact that I can use it with or without a stylus. Like the title of this post suggests - I never used my stylus to paint this image - only my finger. I was surprised that after a while my finger did actually get a little tender but was fine the next day. My goal was to see how far I could take a digital painting using only my finger. I guess you could say I gave my ipad the finger :)...in a good way. With the ability to zoom in and out so quickly - fixing and smoothing line work was a snap.

I do however feel that the perfect tablet for me would be about half as much bigger than the current ipad size. And pressure sensitivity wouldn't hurt either.

This was the sketch - started and finished on the iPad.

  3. Hey Will, that's fantastic! I just got my first "smart phone" (a simple Nokia 5250) and the first thing I did was put a put some drawing apps on it. I am totally hooked!! I have drawn more on my phone in the last two days than I had in two weeks previously. The applications I have are full of limitations and "problems" but I think that makes them better for me because it forces me to work with them and figure out new and interesting methods (like your opacity thing which is an excellent tip by the way). I will have to try drawing on the Ipad next time I get the chance.

  5. Amazing - so like your "real" stuff and distinctly "you". I use Brushes on my iPhone and really can't justify an iPad, though I nearly succumbed on ebay yesterday. And people do wonderful stuff on the iPhone but I'm sure an iPad is better! That's brilliant, Will. Show us something entirely different? ie in a different style, to encourage us?

  7. Will, this is incredible! You never cease to amaze! Gorgeous and funky - great combo! If you have a moment (Which I hate to ask - don't want to take you away from work!) but, I wondered if the drawing was done on paper, scanned in, file opened and then painted. Or was this from scratch on the IPad. Either way, the detail is mind blowing! Whole thing is mind blowing, actually!

  8. Thanks for all the wonderful comments! you might be right Jack! I like your thinking Ryan - I really like having my sketchbook, day planner, camera, movie screen, web surfing device, skype phone, books, flashlight, calculator, game console, and the list goes on with me at all times. I never get bored while I'm stuck somewhere any more.

Ouch Eleanor! a challenge....hmmm. I have the targus stylus and love it! I just wanted to see if I could do it without :)

I started and finished it on the iPad Marion - from concept to sketch to finish. I actually prefer sketching on it now because you can draw - lightly erase - draw - perfect - lightly erase and so on. Thanks!

  16. Hi Will!

Just wanted to let you know, I was playing a new game with the kids last night and while I was playing with it I thought to myself, "Hmm.. this looks like Will Terry's artwork" and it was!!

Your style is so awesome and recognizable. Tiki Topple turned out beautiful. Plus is a really fun game I have to say. My son is here with me and wants me to tell you that he won. LOL!

    Congrats :o)
