SVS - Painting in Photoshop POWER DAY!

I'm so excited to announce our
On Saturday, October 26, 2013 we will be offering an all day online live class taught by 4 different illustrators/animators. In addition the class can be picked up for half price in video recording version for those who couldn't get into the Complete class. We think this will be a really great way to get lots of ideas of how to use the tools in Photoshop since each artist will have a different approach.

I'll be teaching first and then co-teaching with the other 3 artists in their sessions. Then the following week I'll have a follow up one on one session with each person in the Complete class. We can use this time to paint on one of your paintings or drawings, critique, or talk shop - it's your time to decide how to use it.

For those who are brand new to photoshop the Complete class comes with my "Beginning Painting in Photoshop" video tutorial series at folioacademy.com so you won't feel lost in the class.

Since there is NO assignment in the class you do not need to currently own photoshop to attend. Each artist will be presenting their methods of working as they demo in Photoshop. While they work I'll be fielding questions and working them into the conversation as we did in our "Illustration for Storytellers" class.

In all I chose each artist for their unique style and career success. Zac and Brooke are brand new in the children's book world and both are having great success in a short period of time. To me this is a huge benefit to be able to learn just how they did it! I often get asked for advice on breaking into this business but I'm an old guy - these guys have done it in today's ecomomy!

Zac Retz- was born in New York, in 1991. Zac works mostly digitally. Completed his BFA in illustration from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2012. Since then Zac has illustrated a best selling children's book, Too Much Glue. He now works full time at Workinman Interactive making Disney and Nickelodeon games. He continues to work on many concept art freelance projects,  illustrate children's books, and his own projects.

Brooke Boynton Hughes- has a BFA in printmaking from Colorado State University and an MFA in figurative art from the New York Academy of Art.  She currently lives in Fort Collins, CO where she illustrates children's books, goes hiking with her husband, and wrangles two bouncy dogs and a chatty grey kitty.  Brooke's first book, Cupcake Cousins by Kate Hannigan (published by Disney/Hyperion), will come out in the fall of 2014.  She also has two picture books coming out in 2015 (Baby Love by Angela DiTerlizzi, published by Beach Lane Books and MORE! by Linda Ashman, published by Random House).  Visit Brooke online at www.BrookeBoyntonHughes.com

Kevin Keele- has always enjoyed creating artwork in many forms: drawing, oil painting, digital painting, sculpture, even stained glass and pumpkin carving. His work has been featured in numerous picture books, magazines, board games, video games, and novel covers.
Kevin is currently an artist for Disney Interactive. He lives in Utah with his wife and two sons. They’re the caretakers of one cat, three chickens, and thousands of Italian honeybees.

  3. Hi Will! I take care of my son all day, so I can't sit in on the power day. I'd really like to be on the notification list for the recorded version, though, so that I can take advantage of it then.

  5. hey there, just an idea- BUT_ would you guys consider a certificate of completion/accomplishment (COA)that we can frame? I think it would be awesome to show classes i have taken this way. I know some places like Vanderbilt and Duke give free classes and you get certificates of accomplishment, just showing you did the whole thing with the name...for me it would be wonderful to put on my wall signed by you guys...and help open the hubby's wallet haha

    1. Hi Dyann, Yes - Jake and I have decided this is something we have to do - just so busy right now - we'll get it done - it makes sense to be able to have something that shows what you've done!

  10. Hey Will!

I just bought the HD videos, and most of it is great! Really... Except one... Zac Retz's video is lame. We can't hear him very well. We don't see his tools on photoshop. He doesn't explain with details how he is working. He sounds like an autist and finally i didn't learn anything with this video.
I am very disapointed and hope that in the future he won't be part of your videos, because otherwise, i won't buy them.

Anyway, thank you for all the posts on the blog, you are a great teacher!

    1. I understand your thoughts Fleurette. I chose Zac because he is an awesome illustrator and is brand new out of school with a book that's at the top of the charts - more than I've ever accomplished. I was hoping he would also be a good teacher. He was nervous. I would have been nervous at his young age as well. His monitor was set to a high resolution which made viewing his PS controls impossible - we will work on this problem for future videos in our test sessions. We have received many good compliments for Zac's efforts - specifically his story about "asking" for a publishing assignment and seeing major success. Also great compliments for his finished painting and approach. Having said all this I'm not defending the fact that you can NOT follow his process which is what you and others paid for. For that I'm sorry. Zac didn't ask for this assignment - I asked him - I would ask you that in the future if you have specific complaints about a specific artist that you please contact me via email will@willterry.com. I'm sure this would hurt Zac's feelings if he saw it. He's a great artist and he might grow into a great teacher someday.

    2. You're absolutely right Will. Thank you so much for your answer, as always so pertinent.
I'm terribly sorry about my previous comment, i just finished the video and i was a bit disappointed, as i was excepting too much.
Of course, it's his firsts steps as a teacher, and i can't ask too much...
I'll definitely learn to be less agressive et demanding next time.

Zac is a brilliant illustrator. I admire his work, and i am sure, as you are, that he'll be a great teacher one day (and that's obvious if he takes you as an exemple)

Finally, i just have to tell you, how much i love your courses. I bought all of them on folio academy and i follow your blog. You're the best teacher there is concerning illustrations. I already wrote it on my previous comment, but you deserve it twice.

I will send you an email next time I have a question or else, but i just needed to apologize to you and Zac publicly.
Thank you so much for your response which has been my wake-up call. You could easily have erased it, but the fact that you choose to respond to it and as well as you did, is just so great.
      :)
