Do You Think I'll Be Able To Get My Book Published?

I've just started a new series of videos on my youtube channel called, "Can A Guy Get His Children's Book Published?" As a professional children's book illustrator working on other author's stories I wanted to document my journey to getting my own book published. I'm going to share the process from story to submitting my book proposal to an agent(s) and I'll share any successes or rejection letters I get as well. I may not be able to share everything exactly as it happens because when or if negotiations happen often you can't divulge any information until contracts are signed and agreements made.

  1. Did you consider self publishing? It's pretty easy. If you know how to leverage social media it could work pretty well for you. I've got a kids illustrated book on Amazon, publicisizing it is the big hurdle. My partner wrote and I prepared it for print and did all the illustration. I used Createspace, there are more options, if you want to get the paper standard for kids books I think Lulu do it. Good luck with it. I hate sharing my rejections, I would write many more blog posts if I did.

    1. I've self published 3 ebooks and 2 apps - it's an exciting alternative but going the traditional route is a nut I'm determined to crack for personal reasons.

    2. I'ts better for getting it on the shelves of real book shops (instead of online shops) good luck.

  2. Did you obtain the copyright for your book before trying to get it published? I know that is normally part of the traditional publishing process but wondered if there was any harm in obtaining a copyright on your own before it gets picked up by a publisher.

    1. Great question - but no - if I sell it to a publisher they will register the copyright. If I were self publishing I would probably register it...however - registering your copyright doesn't protect you from theft - it only allows you to try to sue for more damages if you're are able to drag the offending party into a court room at your own expense - AND - if the defendant decides not to pay you - you have to pay to bring them back to court. Copyrights are a waste of time IMHO.

  3. Brilliant! I've been pondering doing my own book, story and illustrations, so it'll be great to see how you go about it. Big thank you for sharing and best of luck with it.
