Meet The Monsters of my Monster App!

I'm putting all my faith in these dudes. They say they're good but we'll see when we finally get this app launched in the app store. I was first introduced to the big spotted green guy years ago and he says he won't work without his crew so I had to write all of them into the script. I gave all of them a fresh coat of paint so they shouldn't have any excuses. I have to admit they are pretty fun to have hanging around the studio although the purple guy makes a mess going through my trash.

For the past 5 months I've gone totally paperless and sketch exclusively on my iPad now. The major reason is that I never have to worry about running out of "paper" or room to complete a drawing. When sketching on paper if my drawing became cramped at the edge of the paper I would have to scan my paper or sketchbook, re-size in photoshop, and print on new paper. Not so on iPad - I just hit "re-size" in my drawing program (brushes) and/or move/shrink and keep drawing. My workflow is much faster - AND - environmentally friendly (insert my smiling face with eye sparkle). Anyhow, you can check out more of my iPad sketches for the ebook I'm working on in past posts.

  1. Love those monsters! I know they are going to be a hit, too. My eight yr. old can't get enough of the creepy cute stuff. My fav is the green spotted one. He is wonderful! He'd make a great plush toy - super huggable!
What app are you using to sketch on the iPad? Stylus? I've been experimenting but just haven't taken the leap to 100% ipad drawing. I miss that feeling of resistance paper gives you when you drag your pencil across it. That being said, I think I could give that up for endless paper and a greener process. :)

  3. Love them! I like how each one has it's own unique shape. And funny that our links are right next to each other on IF this week.

  6. Very inspirational!

Will, could you please tell me what sort of stylus and/or glove you use? I've tried all sorts of glove materials, but the charge from my palm or pinkie knuckle keeps carrying through with just a little too much dragging pressure. As for pens, my three little kids keep chewing the ends off, so I want to make my fourth stylus purchase count! Or do you forgo both the glove and the stylus?

Really need to make this streamlined concept stage work for me, so any recommendations would be very appreciated. Your posts are among the few that I never star for later...gotta read right away. Thanks!

  8. Will,
That is looking outstanding! Looking forward to seeing it out on the iPad. Pardon for this question... do you have a section for painting on the ipad, workflow, etc? Thanks for your time!

  9. Thanks for all the encouragement!!! I'll make a video of me working on the ipad and post it here on my blog so people can see how I'm doing it. I'm not saying it's the best way but it works for me. In the end you have to find something that works for you. I bought a stylus and it broke so I started using my finger alone and now I prefer that. Also, I'm using the "brushes" app.
